What is financial coaching, and do I need a coach rather than a planner?

Financial coaching helps you change how you think and behave with money, while financial planning helps you structure and manage it. Both can be valuable, but they serve different purposes.

When people hear “financial advice,” they often think of products: pensions, ISAs, investments. But money decisions aren’t just technical. They’re emotional. That’s where financial coaching comes in.

What is financial coaching?

A financial coach focuses on you, not just your money. They:

~Explore your attitudes and behaviours around money

~Help you set meaningful goals

~Challenge unhelpful habits (like overspending or over-saving)

~Build confidence in financial decision-making

Think of it as personal training, but for your money mindset.

What is financial planning?

A financial planner looks at your assets, liabilities, income, and goals. They:

~Build a strategy for pensions, investments, and tax

~Help structure your estate for future generations

~Provide ongoing oversight to keep you on track

In short, planners focus on the technical and strategic side of wealth.

Do you need a coach or a planner?

It depends on your situation:

If you struggle with money decisions, avoid looking at statements, or feel anxious about spending, a coach can help you build confidence and discipline.

If you have complex finances, pensions, trusts, property, and business interests, a planner ensures everything fits together.

Some people benefit from both: coaching for the behaviours, planning for the strategy.

Why this matters for financial wellness

Financial wellness isn’t just about being wealthy. It’s about feeling in control, aligned, and confident with money. A coach can help you change habits. A planner can make sure those habits build lasting outcomes.

Bringing it together

Coaching and planning aren’t rivals; they’re complementary. The best results often come when both are used together: changing how you think about money, while structuring it wisely for the future.
