Is it more fun to play sport or watch it?

I do love watching some sport, especially sportspeople at the top. Federer. Messi. Ronaldo. Bolt. McIlroy. Hamilton.  For me, it’s much more fun to play. I’ll never be a professional athlete, but I’d rather be a participant than a spectator. In fact, according to a study, learning by doing is better for retention than learning by watching.

When you invest, most people watch.

The investment industry encourages people to ‘watch’ the professionals. Watching means you are not as engaged in the process which can be time-saving. In the division of labour theory, you delegate to someone else who is a specialist. All of this makes sense. Yet, if you are like me and like to play a sport or like to ‘do’ rather than ‘watch’, it makes sense to do more with your money.  To be more actively engaged to learn more. Not only is it more pleasurable, it’s rewarding, it’s intellectually stimulating, but importantly, the outcomes are better.
