I have been thinking about cognitive dissonance

Do you really want to hear the truth?

The old saying ‘the truth hurts’ exists for a reason. Our brains naturally resist information that threatens our self-esteem, challenges our beliefs, complicates our lives, or undermines our status. Admitting we’re wrong or at fault is difficult, even when it’s beneficial for us. When faced with painful truths, we instinctively protect ourselves by shutting down, tuning out, or resisting, often without realising we’re doing it.

Why do we hate to hear the truth, especially if it involves hearing something we need to improve?

A concept called cognitive dissonance gives us an answer.

The state of cognitive dissonance occurs when someone holds two psychologically inconsistent beliefs (or attitudes or opinions) that create an unpleasant mental tension.

What about your money? If you’ve made a decision, do you want to be told it’s wrong? Of course not. The truth sounds appealing in theory, especially when it aligns with our views or flatters us. However, we start to resist when we encounter unpleasant truths.

If you’re willing to challenge your own thinking instead of just seeking confirmation, will your outcomes improve? The answer is a clear yes. Yes and YES. But are you ready to challenge your feelings as well?
