“Competence, like truth, beauty, and contact lenses, is in the eye of the beholder”

It’s a quote by Laurence J Peter. Who is Laurence J Peter? Ever heard of the ‘Peter Principle? Yes, you know this saying. “Every employee tends to rise to his or her level of incompetence – Laurence J Peter”

David Robson is the author of The Intelligence Trap: Why Smart People Make Dumb Mistakes, and he discusses Laurence J Peter here.

He writes” If you frequently find yourself frustrated with your own boss (and their reluctance to give you a promotion) or with your subordinates (and their inability to carry out your instructions) it’s worth considering the possibility that you’ve already reached your “level of incompetence”, in Peter’s words, and you just don’t know it.”

Think about your money and wealth.  How do you recognise a problem when you don’t recognise you have one? Clearly, it’s hard. It requires a mindset that just doesn’t look for the things that go wrong, but why they are going right.  It requires a mindset of open-mindedness.

If you are brave enough to admit to the possibility you have reached your level of incompetence when it comes to your money, you massively increase the chances of identifying your problems.  And if you can identify them, you create an opportunity to solve them. On the other hand, you may be thinking, problems, what problems! I’ve got it sorted…but that’s another story!
